FAQs
Q1. What is a demonstrative pronoun?
A demonstrative pronoun vs adjective is used to point to specific people or things.
Examples:
This is my phone.
Those are birds.
Q2. What is the difference between “This” and “That”?
“This” is used for something near to the speaker — either physically close, mentally close, or something happening now. For example, “This book is mine” means the book is near you. “This is a good idea” shows something you are thinking about right now. So, “this” gives a feeling of closeness.
“That” is used for something far from the speaker — either physically distant, mentally distant, or something from the past. For example, “That house is beautiful” means the house is far from you. “That was a great day” refers to something in the past. So, “that” gives a sense of distance.
Q3. What is the difference between “These” and “Those”?
“These” is used for things or people that are near (close) to us. It is the plural of “this.” We use it when we can see, touch, or feel something nearby. For example, “These books are mine” means the books are close to you. Another example is “These students are in my class” — the students are present near the speaker.
“Those” is used for things or people that are far (not close) from us. It is the plural of “that.” We use it when something is at a distance or not near us. For example, “Those mountains are beautiful” means the mountains are far away. Another example is “Those boys are playing in the field” — the boys are not close to the speaker.
