Preposition

A preposition is a word that is placed before a noun or pronoun to show its relation with another word in a sentence. It tells us about place, time, direction, movement, or connection. Some common prepositions are in, on, at, under, over, near, and beside.

Examples:
• The cat is under the chair.
• He lives in Jaipur.

Prepositions help us make sentences more clear, correct, and meaningful by connecting words properly.

Preposition वह शब्द होता है जो किसी noun या pronoun से पहले लगकर उसका संबंध वाक्य के अन्य शब्दों से बताता है। यह स्थान, समय, दिशा, गति या संबंध को स्पष्ट करता है। सामान्य prepositions हैं: in, on, at, under, over, near, और beside। Preposition वाक्य को सही, स्पष्ट और अर्थपूर्ण बनाने में मदद करता है।

Preposition “Before” – All Possible Uses

Before means earlier than a particular time, event, action, or position.
“Before” का अर्थ होता है किसी समय, घटना, कार्य या स्थिति से पहले।

1. Before + Time (Exact time / Date / Period)

Before + समय (सटीक समय / तारीख / अवधि)
Used to show that something happens earlier than a specific time.
इसका उपयोग यह दिखाने के लिए किया जाता है कि कोई कार्य किसी निश्चित समय से पहले होता है।
Structure:
Before + time / date / period
संरचना: Before + समय / तारीख / अवधि

2. Before + Noun (Event / Thing)

Used when something happens earlier than an event or noun.
जब कोई कार्य किसी घटना या वस्तु से पहले होता है तब इसका उपयोग किया जाता है।
Structure:
Before + noun
संरचना: Before + संज्ञा

खाना खाने से पहले अपने हाथ धोओ।

Before + Pronoun

Used before object pronouns.
इसका उपयोग object pronouns से पहले किया जाता है।

Before + pronoun (me, him, her, us, them)

उसने उनसे पहले काम पूरा किया।

Before + Gerund (Verb + ing)

Used when one action happens earlier than another action.
जब एक कार्य दूसरे कार्य से पहले होता है तब इसका उपयोग किया जाता है।

Before + verb-ing

खाने से पहले अपने हाथ धोओ।
Think carefully before speaking.
बोलने से पहले सोच-समझकर सोचो।

Before + Clause (Before + Subject + Verb)

Used when the action is followed by a full sentence.
जब “before” के बाद पूरा वाक्य आता है तब इसका उपयोग किया जाता है।
Structure:
Before + subject + verb

घर जाने से पहले अपना काम पूरा करो।
She called me before she left.
जाने से पहले उसने मुझे कॉल किया।

Before (Order / Sequence / Priority)

Used to show priority or preference.
प्राथमिकता या महत्व दिखाने के लिए उपयोग किया जाता है।

Safety comes before comfort.
सुरक्षा आराम से पहले आती है।
Health should come before wealth.
स्वास्थ्य धन से पहले होना चाहिए।

Before (In Comparison)

Used to show earlier position or rank.
क्रम या स्थान में पहले होने को दिखाने के लिए उपयोग किया जाता है।

Examples:
A comes before B in the alphabet.
वर्णमाला में A, B से पहले आता है।
He finished before his brother.
उसने अपने भाई से पहले काम पूरा किया।
This chapter comes before the last one.
यह अध्याय आखिरी अध्याय से पहले आता है।

Before (As an Adverb – without object)

Sometimes “before” is used alone (no noun after it).
कभी-कभी “before” अकेले भी प्रयोग होता है (इसके बाद कोई noun नहीं आता)।

मैं उसे पहले देख चुका हूँ।
This has happened before.
यह पहले भी हो चुका है।
He had never been there before.
वह पहले कभी वहाँ नहीं गया था।

Before in Negative Sense (Too late)

Used to show that something did not happen in time.
यह दिखाने के लिए कि कोई काम समय पर नहीं हुआ।

Examples:
The patient died before help arrived.
मदद आने से पहले मरीज की मृत्यु हो गई।
The train left before we could reach.
हमारे पहुँचने से पहले ट्रेन चली गई।
The light went out before I finished reading.
मेरे पढ़ना खत्म करने से पहले ही लाइट चली गई।

Before vs Ago (Common Confusion)

Before → किसी विशेष समय/घटना के संदर्भ में
Ago → वर्तमान समय से पीछे
