How “There” Shows Existence 

The word “there” shows existence by working with the verb “be” (is, are, was, were) to introduce something that exists, rather than something that performs an action. When we say “there is” or “there are,” we are not talking about a place; instead, we are announcing the presence of something. In simple words, “there” acts like a signal that tells the listener: “Pay attention, something exists.” For example, in the sentence “There is a book on the table,” the real message is that a book exists on the table. Similarly, “There are many problems in the world” means many problems exist in the world. If we remove “there,” the sentence becomes “A book is on the table,” which is grammatically correct, but it does not feel like we are introducing something new—it sounds more like we are describing something already known. That is why “there” is used: it helps us bring new information into the conversation.

In longer writing or paragraphs, “there” helps us present ideas step by step. For example: “There are many reasons why students struggle with English. There is a lack of vocabulary, and there are also problems with grammar. There is often no proper guidance available.” In this paragraph, each sentence introduces a new idea using “there,” and each idea is presented as something that exists. So, “there” shows existence not by meaning something itself, but by creating a structure that highlights the presence of something.

“There” किसी चीज़ के होने (existence) को दिखाता है जब यह “be verb” (is, are, was, were) के साथ आता है। इस स्थिति में “there” का मतलब “वहाँ” नहीं होता, बल्कि यह एक संकेत (signal) की तरह काम करता है जो बताता है कि कोई चीज़ मौजूद है। उदाहरण के लिए, “There is a book on the table” का मतलब है कि मेज़ पर एक किताब मौजूद है। इसी तरह, “There are many problems in the world” का अर्थ है कि दुनिया में बहुत सारी समस्याएँ मौजूद हैं। यहाँ “there” खुद कोई चीज़ नहीं है, बल्कि यह सिर्फ sentence की शुरुआत में आकर यह दिखाता है कि हम किसी नई चीज़ के होने की बात कर रहे हैं।

अगर हम “there” हटा दें, तो sentence बनता है: “A book is on the table”। यह भी सही है, लेकिन इसमें नई जानकारी introduce करने का वही प्रभाव नहीं है। “There” का उपयोग करने से sentence ज्यादा natural लगता है और यह साफ़ हो जाता है कि हम किसी चीज़ के existence की बात कर रहे हैं।

Paragraph में “there” का उपयोग ideas को धीरे-धीरे प्रस्तुत करने में मदद करता है। जैसे: “There are many problems in our education system. There is a shortage of good teachers. There are also many students who do not get proper support.” इस paragraph में हर sentence एक नई चीज़ को introduce करता है और बताता है कि वह चीज़ मौजूद है। इसलिए, “there” खुद meaning नहीं देता, बल्कि यह एक ऐसा structure बनाता है जो हमें यह बताने में मदद करता है कि कोई चीज़ है / मौजूद है।

“There” एक बहुत खास शब्द है क्योंकि यह हमेशा जगह (वहाँ) नहीं बताता। कई बार “there” का इस्तेमाल dummy subject (डमी कर्ता) के रूप में होता है।

Dummy subject क्या होता है?

Dummy subject वह होता है जो वास्तविक कर्ता (real subject) नहीं होता, बल्कि केवल sentence की structure को पूरा करने के लिए लगाया जाता है।

English में हर sentence में subject होना जरूरी होता है। लेकिन जब हमें सिर्फ यह बताना हो कि कोई चीज़ मौजूद है (exist करती है), तब हम “there” का उपयोग करते हैं।

उदाहरण:

• There is a book on the table.

👉 मेज़ पर एक किताब है

• There are many students in the class.

👉 कक्षा में बहुत सारे छात्र हैं

यहाँ “there” का मतलब “वहाँ” नहीं है।

यह सिर्फ sentence की शुरुआत करने के लिए है। असली बात book और students के बारे में है।

इसे dummy subject क्यों कहते हैं?

• यह खुद कोई काम नहीं करता
• यह किसी चीज़ को represent नहीं करता
• यह सिर्फ subject की जगह भरता है

हम “there” का उपयोग क्यों करते हैं?

यह existence कैसे दिखाता है?

जब हम कहते हैं “there is” या “there are”, तो हम यह बताते हैं कि:
