What is a Wh-word in the reference of asking questions?
Wh-words are question words used to ask for specific information. Most of these words begin with “Wh”, so they are called Wh-words. They help us ask about person, place, time, reason, method, possession, or choice.
Wh-word वे प्रश्नवाचक शब्द (Question Words) होते हैं जिनका प्रयोग किसी विशेष जानकारी को पूछने के लिए किया जाता है। अधिकांश शब्द “Wh” से शुरू होते हैं, इसलिए इन्हें Wh-words कहा जाता है।

What are you doing?

Main Wh-words
The basic or main Wh-words are the original question words from which many other question forms can be created. / मुख्य Wh-words वे मूल प्रश्नवाचक शब्द हैं जिनकी मदद से हम जानकारी पूछते हैं। इन्हीं से कई अन्य प्रश्नवाचक शब्द बनाए जाते हैं।
1. What (क्या)
Wh-word “What” is used to ask about a thing, action, idea, or information. / What का प्रयोग किसी वस्तु, कार्य, विचार या जानकारी के बारे में पूछने के लिए किया जाता है।
Sentence Structure:
What + helping verb + subject + main verb + object?
Examples:
What is your name?
तुम्हारा नाम क्या है?
What are you doing?
तुम क्या कर रहे हो?
2. Who (कौन)
Wh-word “Who” is used to ask about a person, usually as the subject of the sentence. / Who का प्रयोग किसी व्यक्ति के बारे में पूछने के लिए किया जाता है, विशेषकर जब वह वाक्य का कर्ता (Subject) हो।
Sentence Structure:
Who + helping verb + complement?
or
Who + main verb + object?
Examples:
Who is she?
वह कौन है?
Who called you?
तुम्हें किसने बुलाया / फोन किया?
3. Whom (किसे / किसको / किससे)
Wh-word “Whom” is used to ask about a person when that person is the object of the sentence. / Whom का प्रयोग किसी व्यक्ति के बारे में पूछने के लिए होता है जब वह वाक्य में कर्म (Object) हो।
Sentence Structure:
Whom + helping verb + subject + main verb?
Examples:
Whom did you meet?
तुम किससे मिले? / आप किससे मिले?
Whom are you calling?

4. Whose (किसका / किसकी / किसके)
Wh-word “Whose” is used to ask about possession or ownership. / Whose का प्रयोग किसी वस्तु के मालिक या अधिकार के बारे में पूछने के लिए किया जाता है।
Sentence Structure:
Whose + noun + helping verb + subject/complement?
Examples:
Whose book is this?
यह किसकी किताब है?
Whose phone is ringing?

5. Which (कौन सा / कौन सी / कौन से)
Wh-word “Which” is used when choosing from a limited number of options. / Which का प्रयोग तब किया जाता है जब कुछ विकल्पों में से किसी एक को चुनना हो।
Sentence Structure:
Which + noun + helping verb + subject + main verb?
Examples:
Which color do you like?
तुम्हें कौन सा रंग पसंद है?
Which road leads to the station?

6. Where (कहाँ)
Wh-word “Where” is used to ask about place or location. / Where का प्रयोग स्थान या जगह पूछने के लिए किया जाता है।

तुम कहाँ रहते हो?
Where is my bag?

7. When (कब)
Wh-word “When” is used to ask about time. / When का प्रयोग समय पूछने के लिए किया जाता है।

Examples:
When will you come?
तुम कब आओगे?
When did they arrive?
वे कब पहुँचे?
8. Why (क्यों)
Wh-word “Why” is used to ask about reason or cause. / Why का प्रयोग कारण पूछने के लिए किया जाता है।

Why + helping verb + subject + main verb/complement?

Why are you sad?
तुम उदास क्यों हो?
Why did she leave?

9. How (कैसे)
Wh-word “How” is used to ask about manner, method, condition, or degree. It can also combine with other words to form expressions like how much, how many, how long, how far, etc. / How का प्रयोग तरीका, स्थिति, अवस्था या मात्रा पूछने के लिए किया जाता है। इससे कई नए expressions बनते हैं जैसे how much, how many, how long, how far आदि।

How Are Other Wh-Words Formed?
/ अन्य Wh-Words कैसे बनाए जाते हैं?
Some Wh-words can combine with adjectives (describing words), nouns (naming words), or adverbs (words describing time, place, manner, etc.) to create new question expressions. These combinations help us ask more specific and detailed questions. For example, instead of asking only “How?”, we can ask “How much?”, “How many?”, “How long?”, or “How often?” depending on what information we want.
कुछ Wh-words दूसरे शब्दों जैसे विशेषण (Adjectives), संज्ञा (Nouns), या क्रिया विशेषण (Adverbs) के साथ मिलकर नए प्रश्नवाचक वाक्यांश (Question Expressions) बनाते हैं। इनका उपयोग अधिक विशिष्ट (specific) जानकारी पूछने के लिए किया जाता है। उदाहरण के लिए, केवल “How?” (कैसे?) पूछने के बजाय हम “How much?”, “How many?”, “How long?”, या “How often?” पूछ सकते हैं।
The word HOW is the most flexible Wh-word. By adding another word after HOW, we can ask about quantity, number, time, distance, frequency, age, speed, weight, and much more. / HOW सबसे अधिक उपयोगी और लचीला (flexible) Wh-word है। इसके बाद दूसरा शब्द जोड़कर हम मात्रा, संख्या, समय, दूरी, आवृत्ति, उम्र, गति, वजन आदि के बारे में पूछ सकते हैं।

Wh-Word “How much” is used to ask about uncountable quantity (things we cannot count individually) or price/cost. / How much का प्रयोग अगणनीय चीजों (Uncountable Nouns) की मात्रा या कीमत (price) पूछने के लिए किया जाता है।

3. How long (कितनी देर / कितना लंबा)
Wh-Word “How long” is used to ask about duration (time period) or physical length. / How long का प्रयोग समय की अवधि या लंबाई पूछने के लिए होता है।

4. How far (कितनी दूर)
Wh-Word “How far” is used to ask about distance. / How far का प्रयोग दूरी पूछने के लिए किया जाता है।

5. How often (कितनी बार)
Wh-Word “How often” is used to ask about frequency (how many times something happens). / How often का प्रयोग किसी काम के कितनी बार होने के बारे में पूछने के लिए किया जाता है।

Wh-Word “How high” asks about the height or level upward, especially mountains, walls, or flying objects. / How high का प्रयोग ऊपर की ओर ऊँचाई पूछने के लिए किया जाता है।

Wh-Word “How soon” is used to ask about how quickly something will happen in the future. / How soon का प्रयोग भविष्य में कितनी जल्दी कुछ होगा यह पूछने के लिए किया जाता है।

16. How come (ऐसा क्यों / कैसे)
Wh-Word “How come” is an informal way to ask “why.” It is common in spoken English. / How come अनौपचारिक रूप से “क्यों” पूछने का तरीका है। यह बोलचाल की अंग्रेज़ी में अधिक प्रयोग होता है।

What kind (किस प्रकार / किस तरह का)
We use Wh-Word “What kind” to ask about the general type or category of something. / हम What kind का प्रयोग किसी चीज़ के सामान्य प्रकार या श्रेणी के बारे में पूछने के लिए करते हैं।

What type (कौन सा प्रकार)
Wh-Word “What type” is similar to What kind, but it is often more formal. / What type का अर्थ What kind जैसा ही है, लेकिन यह थोड़ा अधिक औपचारिक (formal) है।

What day (कौन सा दिन)
We use Wh-Word “What day” to ask about the day of the week. / हम What day का प्रयोग सप्ताह का दिन पूछने के लिए करते हैं।

f) What subject
What subject (कौन सा विषय)
We use Wh-Word “What subject” to ask about school or study subjects. / हम What subject का प्रयोग पढ़ाई के विषय पूछने के लिए करते हैं।

2. Which + Noun
We use Wh-Word “Which + noun” when there is a limited number of choices, and we want someone to choose one. / जब कुछ सीमित विकल्प (choices) हों और हमें उनमें से एक चुनना हो, तब हम Which + noun का प्रयोग करते हैं।

Difference between What and Which
What is used when choices are not limited. / What का प्रयोग तब होता है जब विकल्प सीमित न हों।
Which is used when choices are limited. / Which का प्रयोग तब होता है जब विकल्प सीमित हों।
Example:

3. Whose + Noun
We use Wh-Word “Whose + noun” to ask about ownership or possession (who something belongs to). / हम Whose + noun का प्रयोग अधिकार या स्वामित्व पूछने के लिए करते हैं, यानी कोई चीज़ किसकी है।

This asks about the owner of the bag.

These are not used in daily spoken English much, but you may see them in literature, formal writing, or old English style.
1. Whence
Means: From where / कहाँ से
Examples:
Whence did you come?
(From where did you come?) / तुम कहाँ से आए हो?
2. Whither
Means: To where / कहाँ की ओर / कहाँ जाना
Examples:
Whither are you going?
(To where are you going?) / तुम कहाँ जा रहे हो?
3. Whereby
Means: By which / through which (जिसके द्वारा)
Examples:
A method whereby we can succeed.
(A method by which we can succeed.) / वह तरीका जिसके द्वारा हम सफल हो सकते हैं।
4. Wherein
Means: In which / inside which (जिसमें)
Examples:
A situation wherein we learn a lesson.
(A situation in which we learn a lesson.) / वह स्थिति जिसमें हम सीखते हैं।
5. Wherefore
Means: Why (reason) / क्यों
Examples:
Wherefore did you leave?
(Why did you leave?) / तुमने ऐसा क्यों किया?
“-EVER” Wh-Words (Very Important Group)
“-ever” वाले Wh-Words
These are very common in modern English. They show anything, anyone, any place, any time (no limitation).
1. Whatever (जो भी / कुछ भी)
Means: Anything
Examples:
Take whatever you like.
Do whatever you want.
2. Whoever
Means: Any person (जो भी व्यक्ति)
Examples:
Whoever comes first will win.
3. Whichever
Means: Any choice from options (जो भी विकल्प)
Examples:
Choose whichever book you like.
4. Wherever
Means: Any place (जहाँ भी)
Examples:
I will go wherever you go.
5. Whenever
Means: Any time (जब भी)
Examples:
Call me whenever you need help.
6. However
Means: In any way / no matter how (चाहे जैसे भी)
Examples:
However you try, you cannot stop me.
7. Whyever (Rare)
Means: No matter why (चाहे किसी भी कारण से)
Examples:
