Past Indefinite Tense

Past Indefinite Tense (Simple Past Tense) (साधारण भूतकाल) अंग्रेज़ी का एक बहुत ही महत्वपूर्ण tense है, जिसका उपयोग ऐसे कार्यों (actions) को व्यक्त करने के लिए किया जाता है जो भूतकाल में शुरू होकर भूतकाल में ही समाप्त हो चुके हों (completed action in the past)। इस tense में काम का वर्तमान से कोई सीधा संबंध नहीं होता, बल्कि केवल यह बताया जाता है कि काम पहले हो चुका है। इसमें अक्सर yesterday, last night, last year, ago, in 2020 जैसे समय के शब्दों का प्रयोग होता है (जैसे “I went to school yesterday”, “She completed her work last night”)। इसकी Hindi pahchan (हिंदी पहचान) होती है – “ता था, ती थी, ते थे या ई, ए, आ, ई, ए  (या, यी, ये, था, थी, थे, दिया, लिया, गया)” आदि (जैसे “मैंने खाना खाया”, “वह स्कूल गया”, “उन्होंने काम किया”)।

सकारात्मक वाक्य (Affirmative) में संरचना होती है: Subject + V2 (verb की दूसरी form) + object। यहाँ verb की दूसरी form (past form) का प्रयोग किया जाता है, चाहे subject singular हो या plural (जैसे “She wrote a letter”, “They played cricket”)। हिंदी में यह “उसने पत्र लिखा”, “उन्होंने क्रिकेट खेला” के रूप में आता है।

नकारात्मक वाक्य (Negative) में संरचना होती है: Subject + did not (didn’t) + V1 + object। यहाँ ध्यान दें कि did के बाद हमेशा verb की पहली form (V1) आती है (जैसे “She did not write a letter”, “They did not play cricket”)। हिंदी में यह “उसने पत्र नहीं लिखा”, “उन्होंने क्रिकेट नहीं खेला” के रूप में होता है।

प्रश्नवाचक वाक्य (Interrogative) में वाक्य Did से शुरू होता है, फिर subject और फिर V1 आता है: Did + subject + V1 + object + ? (जैसे “Did she write a letter?”, “Did they play cricket?”)। इसके छोटे उत्तर होते हैं: Yes, she did / No, she did not। हिंदी में यह “क्या उसने पत्र लिखा?”, “क्या उन्होंने क्रिकेट खेला?” होता है।

नकारात्मक प्रश्नवाचक (Negative Interrogative) में संरचना होती है: Did + subject + not + V1 + object? या छोटा रूप Didn’t + subject + V1 + object? (जैसे “Didn’t she write a letter?”)। ऐसे वाक्य अक्सर आश्चर्य या शिकायत दिखाते हैं – “क्या उसने पत्र नहीं लिखा?”

Wh-word वाले प्रश्न (Interrogative) में what, where, when, why, how आदि सबसे पहले आते हैं। संरचना होती है: Wh-word + did + subject + V1 + object + ? (जैसे “Where did you go?”, “Why did she cry?”)। ये वाक्य विशेष जानकारी पूछने के लिए उपयोग होते हैं।

Wh-word वाले नकारात्मक प्रश्नवाचक (Negative Interrogative) में संरचना होती है: Wh-word + did + subject + not + V1 + object + ? या छोटा रूप Wh-word + didn’t + subject + V1 + object + ? (जैसे “Why did she not come?”, “Why didn’t she come?”, “Where didn’t they go?”)। ऐसे वाक्य किसी कारण (reason), शिकायत (complaint) या आश्चर्य (surprise) को व्यक्त करते हैं।

इस प्रकार, Past Indefinite Tense हमें यह बताने में मदद करता है कि कोई काम भूतकाल में पूरा हो चुका है।

Example Sentences:

1. Affirmative (सकारात्मक वाक्य)

Structure: Subject + V2 + Object

Examples:

   उसने नई ड्रेस खरीदी।

2. Negative (नकारात्मक वाक्य)

Structure: Subject + did not (didn’t) + V1 + Object

   मैंने अपना काम पूरा नहीं किया।
2. She did not buy a new dress.
   उसने नई ड्रेस नहीं खरीदी।

3. Interrogative (प्रश्नवाचक वाक्य)

Structure: Did + Subject + V1 + Object + ?

Examples:

1. Did you finish your work?
   क्या तुमने अपना काम पूरा किया?
2. Did she buy a new dress?
   क्या उसने नई ड्रेस खरीदी?

4. Negative Interrogative

Structure: Did + Subject + not + V1 + Object?
or Didn’t + Subject + V1 + Object?

Examples:

1. Did you not finish your work? / Didn’t you finish your work?
   क्या तुमने अपना काम पूरा नहीं किया?
2. Did she not buy a new dress? / Didn’t she buy a new dress?
   क्या उसने नई ड्रेस नहीं खरीदी?

5. Wh-word Interrogative

Structure: Wh-word + did + Subject + V1 + Object + ?

Examples:

1. Where did you go?
   तुम कहाँ गए?
2. Why did she cry?
   वह क्यों रोई?

6. Wh-word Negative Interrogative

Structure: Wh-word + did + Subject + not + V1 + Object?
or Wh-word + didn’t + Subject + V1 + Object?

Examples:

1. Why did you not come? / Why didn’t you come?
   तुम क्यों नहीं आए?
2. Where did she not go? / Where didn’t she go?
   वह कहाँ नहीं गई?
