Correlative Conjunction – (English + Hindi)

English:

Correlative conjunctions are words that work in pairs to join equal words, phrases, or clauses in a sentence.

Hindi:

Correlative Conjunction (सहसंबंधी संयोजक) वे संयोजक होते हैं जो जोड़े (pairs) में प्रयोग होकर समान स्तर के शब्दों या वाक्यांशों को जोड़ते हैं

1. both … and

Meaning: two together

Hindi: दोनों … और

Example:

Both Ram and Shyam are present.

राम और श्याम दोनों उपस्थित हैं।

2. either … or

Meaning: one of two choices

Hindi: या तो … या

Example:

Either you come or I will go.

या तो तुम आओ या मैं जाऊँगा।

3. neither … nor

Meaning: not this and not that

Hindi: न तो … न ही

Example:

Neither he nor his brother was there.

न तो वह और न ही उसका भाई वहाँ था।

4. not only … but also

Meaning: adds extra emphasis

Hindi: न केवल … बल्कि भी

Example:

He is not only intelligent but also hardworking.

वह न केवल बुद्धिमान है बल्कि मेहनती भी है।

5. whether … or

Meaning: shows two possibilities

Hindi: चाहे … या

Example:

Whether you agree or not, I will go.

चाहे तुम सहमत हो या नहीं, मैं जाऊँगा।

6. both … or(Incorrect)

⚠️ Note: This pair is grammatically wrong.

✔️ Correct pair: both … and

7. no sooner … than

Meaning: one action happens immediately after another

Hindi: जैसे ही … वैसे ही

Example:

No sooner had he arrived than it started raining.

जैसे ही वह पहुँचा, वैसे ही बारिश शुरू हो गई।

8. hardly / scarcely … when

Meaning: something happens immediately after another

Hindi: मुश्किल से … तभी

Example:

Hardly had I reached home when it began to rain.


मैं मुश्किल से घर पहुँचा था तभी बारिश शुरू हो गई।

9. as … as

Meaning: comparison or equality

Hindi: जितना … उतना / के बराबर

Example:

She is as intelligent as her sister.

वह अपनी बहन जितनी ही बुद्धिमान है।

10. so … that

Meaning: cause and result

Hindi: इतना … कि

Example:

He was so tired that he fell asleep.

वह इतना थका हुआ था कि सो गया।

11. such … that

Meaning: result due to quality or nature

Hindi: ऐसा … कि

Example:

It was such a hot day that we stayed indoors.

इतना गर्म दिन था कि हम घर के अंदर रहे।

12. the more … the more

Meaning: proportional comparison

Hindi: जितना … उतना

Example:

The more you practice, the more you improve.

जितना अधिक अभ्यास करोगे, उतना ही सुधार होगा।

13. rather … than

Meaning: preference

Hindi: की बजाय

Example:

I would walk rather than wait.

मैं इंतज़ार करने की बजाय पैदल चलना पसंद करूँगा।

14. not … but

Meaning: contrast

Hindi: नहीं … बल्कि

Example:

He is not a teacher but a writer.

वह शिक्षक नहीं बल्कि लेखक है।

15. not so … as

Meaning: used to show inequality (one thing is less than another)
Hindi:

इतना … नहीं जितना

Example:

He is not so tall as his brother.

वह अपने भाई जितना लंबा नहीं है

16. as … as

Meaning: used to show equality or comparison
Hindi:

जितना … उतना / के बराबर

Example:

She is as intelligent as her sister.

वह अपनी बहन जितनी ही बुद्धिमान है।

17. so … that

Meaning: used to show cause and result
Hindi:

इतना … कि

Example:

He was so tired that he fell asleep.

वह इतना थका हुआ था कि सो गया।

18. such … that

Meaning: used to show result due to quality or nature
Hindi:

ऐसा / ऐसी / ऐसे … कि

Example:

It was such a hot day that we stayed indoors.
